Dr. Peter Korsten, MD  

 

Dr. Peter Korsten is a board-certified Rheumatologist and Attending Physician at the Department of Nephrology and Rheumatology at the University Medical Center Göttingen (UMG), Germany.  He was born in 1982 in Mönchengladbach, Germany. During his medical studies, he spent time in Ecuador and Mexico during internships.

After receiving his medical degree at the Heinrich-Heine University Düsseldorf, Germany, in 2008, he started his residency in Rheumatology and Nephrology at the UMG in Göttingen, Germany (Head of Department: Prof. Dr. Gerhard A. Müller). At UMG, he currently runs a clinic for systemic diseases with a major focus on Sarcoidosis, Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, Systemic Sclerosis and Inflammatory Myositis.

His primary focus of research are important organ complications in these disorders, such as lung or renal involvement, another major interest are methodological aspects of clinical trial design, systematic reviews and meta-analyses.

In 2016, he was awarded a faculty grant from the Georg-August University Göttingen for a translational project on epigenetic changes in Lupus nephritis.

He has acted as investigator in various clinical trials in rheumatic diseases, such as SLE, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Ankylosing Spondylitis and Psoriatic Arthritis. He is currently an Associate Editor of Frontiers Medicine, Rheumatology Section, and has served as a reviewer for numerous journals (e. g. SVDLD, Rheumatology, Clinical Rheumatology, Orphanet Journal of Rare Diseases, Frontiers Immunology, Frontiers Medicine, Lupus and BMJ Case Reports, among others). Dr Korsten has authored several original articles, case reports, book chapters and reviews on various systemic diseases including sarcoidosis.

He is actively involved in international collaborative networks, such as the American-European Network of Antisynthetase Syndrome (AENEAS), the Lupus Nephritis Trials Network (LNTN) and the German Network of Systemic Sclerosis (DNSS). He also serves as methodologist for the European Respiratory Society Task Force on Sarcoidosis Treatment (Chairs: Prof. Robert P. Baughman and Prof. Dominique Valeyre).
